Using Behavioural Skills Training to Teach Layups in Basketball

Claudia Oddo

Behavioural analysis procedures have been used to improve athletes’ performance in various sports. Skateboarding, hockey, and football have used behavioural skills training to enhance fundamentals or teach skills with the aim, among others, of reducing the risk of injury on the court. The following study evaluated the effects of developing the left-handed layup shooting technique in basketball through behavioural skills training on school-aged children. The effectiveness of the training was also investigated by comparing the learning of a typically developing child and a child diagnosed with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Procedures were evaluated using the multiple baseline design among participants. Data were collected during individual training sessions performed in the gym. The results showed the acquisition and improvement of the left-handed layup shooting technique after implementing the intervention. The effectiveness of the intervention was also evidenced by the maintenance of the skill in the follow-up phase.
