Assessing Parental Responsiveness in Early Communication

In 2004, WHO identified two fundamental qualities required to support infant biopsycho-social development, which determine the care-giver’s ability to provide effective care: sensitivity and responsiveness to the child. These skills enable the caregivers to detect the child’s signals and to respond appropriately and in synchrony in order to meet the child’s needs (WHO, 2004). We present two self-report inventories (QVARG-CL 0-24 months and QVAR-G 24-36 months), which describe parental responsiveness features. The aim is to aid clinicians in planning the most appropriate intervention, helping them to evaluate whether and how to involve parents in interventions supporting language development in toddlers and children with language delay.
