Music and Multisensory Learning in the Education of Deaf Children

Ersilia Bosco

Music and spoken language are two of the fundamental forms of human communication. What is the relationship between music and language? How valuable is music education for children? Does it make sense to talk about music education for children with sensory disabilities, and in particular for deaf children? How is it possible to appreciate music using a cochlear implant, considering that it was designed and developed for understanding language? Are there specific programmes and methods for introducing and training deaf children who use cochlear implants to listen to and produce music? We will attempt to answer these questions, based on the contributions of researchers in the field and personal professional experience, in order to promote greater attention to music education and expand the opportunities for deaf children to experience and enjoy music.
