The study examines the role of capacity for work in relation to occupational safety. Starting from an analysis of the economic, cultural and social aspects of the occupational safety issue, and focusing particular attention on apportioning the related costs, the paper examines in detail, also with reference to the Italian system, the good practices, the critical aspects and possible improvements related to the shift from the approach of standardised job abilities to the approach of appreciating individual abilities in preventing risks and protecting against occupational risks.
