Ambivalence and Defensive Function of Problematic Behaviors
Giombattista Amenta
This work examines the ambivalent nature and defensive function of student problem behaviour, highlighting the limits of the prescriptive-normative approach and conventional punishments. Through the analysis of specific cases, such as that of the protagonist of the film Stars on Earth, it is revealed how problematic behaviors also represent defensive strategies to cope with specific difficulties and complexities. Alternative educational reflections and interventions are proposed which aim at understanding, supporting and promoting critical responsibility in students, rather than punishment, humiliation and mortification.
