Even if the work of hospital teachers appears to be highly complex work, performed in unusual teaching environments, it continues to be an educational service that is insufficiently codified in Italy, characterised by limited initial training and with no supervision during the programme.
We present a recent Dutch study (Mourik, 2008) in this article that analyses the roles, functions and characteristics of hospital teachers, comparing the study with the work performed offi cially or unoffi cially by Italian colleagues.
