In Italy, data on access to employment for persons with disabilities show significant challenges. Statistics show an employment gap between men and women with disabilities and education has a significant impact on employment. People with a high level of education have more employment opportunities than those with a low level of education. The region in which one lives also has a significant influence on access to employment, with the South showing lower employment rates than the rest of the country. Despite the adoption of laws promoting the employment of people with disabilities, data indicate that only a minority of them are actually employed, often only on a temporary basis. Such data reveal how important a role special pedagogy can play in guiding responses, accompanying practices, and training related to this phenomenon. Access to work remains a challenge, and special pedagogy has an important cultural and scientific role to play in ensuring fair and inclusive access to work for all people.
