Concept maps for visually impaired students: How to enhance their usability and increase learning and inclusion

Angela De Piano

The main objective of this research is to improve the use of concept maps in teaching for students with low vision.
Concept maps are important in the learning process because they help students to focus on content and synthesise concepts, and they support metacognitive learning. However, using these tools can be difficult for students with low vision: the maps are difficult to read and they have a reticular structure. Given the importance of these learning tools, this paper aims to identify the problems that students with low vision find in their use, in order to find solutions to improve their exploration. This paper may also be useful for teachers, with the objective of ensuring the accessibility of educational content.
