From integration to inclusion, amongst utopian tensions and fears

Maria Antonella Galanti

Law 517 was issued during a period of great social turmoil, a period in which a sort of right for shared happiness was being claimed. The idea of accepting diversity as a resource and not as a limit was chained to the principles of solidarity and integration. Over the course of the next forty years, from integration we have reached a new and more complex idea of inclusion. However, still, today some of the achievements related to Law 517 are being threatened by widespread selfishness and by new fears making way into collective thought.
