Migrazioni, retorica e buone pratiche

The misinformation and tragedies related to migration leads us to reflect on the need for citizens to have a more critical approach to information, to be more aware of the ongoing conflict between different visions of development and more ready to operate in a consistent manner with the aspiration to equality of rights and opportunities for all. Schools and universities can play a key role in this, if they are systematically connected with the territory and with inclusive local development experiences. They can help to give birth to, systematize and spread the knowledge needed for change and for a new model of development cooperation, in which migration can be recognized as a legitimate expression of universal aspiration to equality and to attractive and inclusive societies. This aspiration (now endorsed by the United Nations) emerged only a few centuries ago, after thousands of years of violence and abuse legitimized by the law of the strongest. However, it seems unstoppable and is powered by the same antibodies produced by unequal societies. Perhaps, an informed and aware citizen will not see, in her or his lifetime, the fruits of efforts for the humanization of migrations and societies. Nevertheless, s/he will know to be on the right track and will feel the satisfaction of adding a fragment of sense to daily existence and of working for a better future.
