This paper analyses the phenomenon of the so-called foreign fighters by using the most recent sources and reports. After having examined the meaning of the Arabic word jihad, it goes through some of the most famous cases. While the first part examines the background, age, motivations of the foreign fighters, as well as the role of friends and the jail as a place of recruitment, the second part is on women and on sex rules within the Islamic State. Finally, the last part is on Tunisia, the country that provides the largest number of fighters. Key words: foreign fighters, terrorism, jihad, Isis, Daesh.
