This paper describes a screening project on SLD carried out in 23 schools on a sample of 1,855 pupils attending the third year of primary school and the first years of lower and upper secondary schools. Pupils’ reading, writing and mathematics skills were measured through the use of a standard test protocol. The analysis of the results shows that 125 pupils equal to 6.73% of the sample met the risk criteria for a Specific Learning Disorder. One year after the conclusion of the project further investigation aimed at verifying the results of the screening at a clinical and educational level was carried out. In this phase, involving 109 students of the 125 at risk, only 39 (35%) of the reported students performed the diagnostic procedures and only 34 provided the school with diagnostic documentation. The overall percentage of pupils who had been diagnosed with SDL at the end of the project was equal to 1.8% (32 pupils).
