Overdiagnosis of School Disabilities and Specific Learning Disorders

Claudio Coscarella, Elisa Casini, Monica Zoccoli

Phenomena of overdiagnosis are recursive in schools and healthcare, highlighting some rigidities and dysfunctions of the two systems of care in the developmental age. The exponential growth of diagnoses of specific learning disorder (SLD) and the constant increase in pupils with disabilities (H) are documented through the publications of some research papers and by MIUR. Statistics. These phenomena are similar to the exponential increase of differential classes of students with medical diagnoses of scholastic disability around the 1960s and early 70s. Phenomena of overdiagnosis mark widespread distress among families, teachers and healthcare workers.
