Dyslexia: lexical or sub-lexical treatment?

In recent years there has been an explosion in rehabilitation programmes/software/apps (free and for sale) for reading treatment, some of which propose the tachistoscopic presentation of words and others of syllables, some of which are inserted into the context of a piece and others in isolated presentation. These programmes give the clinician, who is tasked with planning a rehabilitation intervention for developmental dyslexia, a complex choice regarding the most appropriate type of stimuli and context to use with a given child. Adopting neuropsychological models of reading and learning and an evaluation of the patient’s reading profile, indications are provided in order to guide the clinician towards a motivated choice of type of treatment for the reading disorder. To this end, four clinical cases are exemplified, for which we chose to use the following a) lexical treatment in an isolated context; b) lexical treatment in the context of a passage; c) sub-lexical treatment in the context of a passage; and d) sub-lexical treatment in an isolated context. The presentation is intended to offer insights and to represent a clinical reference for the setting up of rehabilitation programmes for developmental dyslexia, targeting the characteristics of each individual child.
