Learning to use double consonants: a proposal for a procedure for individuals with spelling disorders

Errors relating to the omission or addition of double consonants are very frequent in individuals with specific spelling disorder and they persist even in adults. Literature does not provide exhaustive data on interventions aimed at remediating spelling skills. In general, rehabilitation treatment seems to have positive effects, especially if intensive, but in the context of spelling disorders it is still difficult to identify well-coded methods (Togersen, 2001; Tressoldi, 2007; Wanzek, 2006). In this paper, a procedure will be presented that aims at the correct use of double consonants in individuals with a specific spelling disorder, working simultaneously on the phonetic and attentional aspects. The procedure was applied to a sample of 10 individuals with specific spelling disorder and produced an improvement in their spelling performance.
