Astonishment as an educational technique in the pupil-teacher relationship with behavioural disorders

Melinda Pellizzari

In current literature, it is important to establish a good relationship between pupils and their teachers in order to ensure a positive experience at school and to facilitate an effective learning process; however, when faced with pupils showing oppositional and defiant behaviours, this is not always an easy goal to achieve. Presented in this paper is a strategy for teachers that may be implemented when pupils present initial manifestations of anger and opposition. The cases presented here, with 11-12 year-old pupils, were managed in a positive way through the application of a method based on the effect of astonishment and surprise. The aim of this paper is to offer a contribution in order to improve the teacher-pupil relationship and school well-being.
