Family Therapy and the Languages of Families with a Child with ASD

Silvano Solari

The treatment of autism, from a systemic relational perspective, implies the constant participation of parents in psychotherapeutic sessions. At the beginning, meetings can be carried out frequently on an exclusive basis, in order to activate intra-family interactive processes. Following the start of the rehabilitation interventions necessary for the child, the family therapeutic encounter must be allowed to develop and be maintained over time with periodic sessions. In this way, each family has the opportunity to express its potential and measure itself internally in the relationship between the parents and that between the parents and the child. At the same time, each family unit allows the psychotherapist to be part of its own linguistic processes, so as to be able to become an active part and contribute to any necessary changes. These can occur if the usual descriptions that parents and children present in their mutual interactions are gradually replaced with alternative narratives, which, in fact, represent unique narratives to which the subject with ASD contributes with their own story.
