The recovery of communicative and linguistic skills in early treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Comparative models and strategies

The recovery of communicative and language skills in early treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders is an important field of clinical research. The various treatment models have systematised a specific area of intervention that concerns the development of language. This paper presents the most popular evidence-based models and strategies focusing on the methodology used in the communicative-linguistic context. On the one hand, the review highlights the distinctive features of each model, on the other, it highlights their similarities and therefore the need to overcome long-standing and sometimes forced dichotomies between the different models. The final aim should be to choose the treatment model by focusing attention on the question «what works and for whom?». By doing so, we will be able to offer every child the best therapeutic opportunity appropriate to their functional profile and level of development.
