Autism, autisms and neurodiversity: Clinical interpretative models

Roberto Militerni

During the last few years a series of data has had a decisive influence on the way of conceiving autism and, more generally, «spectrum» disorders. Currently there is a strong bias towards considering autism as neurodiversity. However, autism must be diagnosed according to the standard procedures of medical disciplines, it must be monitored from a medical point of view during its development because of the high frequency of comorbidity, and it must be subjected to medical treatment when the frequent associated pathologies have a decisive influence on general adaptive functioning. It is, however, necessary that diagnosis, prognosis and treatment take into consideration the peculiarities related to the concept of neurodiversity.
