An Innovative Model for the Assessment and Integrated Management of ADHD-Autism Comorbidity

Comorbidity between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) represents a growing diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, with an estimated prevalence of between 50% and 70%. The overlap in symptoms and the specific neurobiological characteristics require integrated, evidence-based service models. The main objective is to describe an innovative model for the assessment and management of ASD-ADHD comorbidity, analysing its operational components and consistency with national and international guidelines. The model is divided into four operational phases: (a) Pre-school assessment and early intervention (4–6 years) involving screening for ADHD risk factors in children with ASD; (b) multimodal assessment using innovative technologies; (c) non-pharmacological multimodal interventions; (d) pharmacological management with methylphenidate in accordance with the AIFA protocol. The model described represents a replicable framework for the management of ASD-ADHD comorbidity within the Italian public healthcare system, combining scientific evidence, technological innovation and current guidelines, and integrating evidence-based interventions into a structured pathway that takes into account the specific characteristics of dual diagnosis. This systematic, multimodal approach – ranging from early prevention to pharmacological management – aligns with the recommendations of the guidelines and can be adapted to other regional contexts. Furthermore, the use of digital technologies enhances engagement and the ecological validity of the assessment.
