Parenting Style and Suicide Risk in Adolescence

This systematic review aims to explore the association between parenting styles and suicide risk among adolescents. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in March 2023 using the PubMed database. Out of 100 identified articles, only 7 studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. The findings indicate that the authoritarian parenting style is most strongly associated with an increased risk of suicide among adolescents. In addition, the indifferent/neglectful parenting style, and to a lesser extent, the permissive style, were also linked to heightened suicide risk. In contrast, the authoritative parenting style was found to have a protective effect towards suicidal behaviours in adolescents. However, these results may be limited by cultural biases and the scarcity of research on this topic. Future research should further investigate the parenting styles that significantly influence suicide risk in adolescents.
