Regarding teaching and training, the relationship is to be considered a craft or even an art form. Artisans and artists learn their job by doing practical training in a workshop, alongside a good teacher. We therefore suggest switching the research focus towards individuals and more narrow constructs as, for example, adherence, empathy, therapeutic contract, case formulation and working alliance. To conclude, we suggest bidding farewell to the term «therapeutic relationship», because it is far too generic to be used today with good outcomes in research and teaching and also for the formulation of sound theories both in scientific and clinical fields.
