Further evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale in non-clinical samples

Consistent with previous international studies, Lombardo’s validation study (2008) of the Italian
Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS) suggested that a 4-factor measurement model was more
parsimonious than the original 6-factor model. In this work we compared the robustness of fit of the
4-factor model with that of more and less parsimonious models. Specifically, we investigated (1) the
association of MPS factor scores with socio-demographical variables, (2) the discriminant construct
validity of the MPS and (3) the test-retest reliability of the MPS in non-clinical participants. Results
of confirmatory factor analyses supported the adequacy and parsimony of the 4-factor measurement
model and showed that the Personal Standards and Organisation factors were positively associated
with educational level and age, respectively. Construct validity analyses revealed that the Concern Over
Mistakes/Doubts About Actions scale correlated with a number of measures of other anxiety-based
constructs and that the Personal Standard scale was positively associated with narcissism. The MPS
scales also showed adequate test-retest reliability. The results of this study support the validity and
reliability of a 4-factor measurement model for the Italian version of MPS.
