Cognitive Behavioural Treatment of relationship distress between partners

Giusy Cardillo, Francesco Vincelli, Ivan Zingales, Giovanni Lo Savio

This case shows how therapeutic techniques originally designed for individuals have been successfully
adapted for use with couples struggling with a wide range of relationship problems. The following
aspects are described: case conceptualisation, formulated on the basis of Beck’s cognitive theory
and cognitive-behavioural couples therapy. For unrealistic attributions, assumptions, standards, and
expectations, therapist and partners worked together to generate alternative and more accurate
explanations, which created greater positive feelings between partners. Furthermore, the use of
behavioural techniques, such as contingency contracting, communication training and problem solving
strategies improved communication skills and conflict management. The step-by-step procedure is
explained from intake to assessment, treatment delivery and outcomes.
