Childhood Apraxia of Speech Treatment

Laura L. Moorer

This article summarizes the presentation: Childhood Apraxia of Speech Treatment: Incorporating the Principles of Motor Learning provided at the First Italian Congress on CAS held on January 17, 2026. Treatment for childhood apraxia of speech requires specialized treatment that is intensive, dynamic and geared towards motor learning. The principles of motor learning, including practice conditions and feedback are important and should be planned for and appropriately incorporated to promote learning and generalization of targets. In addition, the child must have certain precursors to motor learning in order for therapy to be successful. This article provides a description of the different practice conditions (practice distribution, practice conditions, and practice variability) and feedback (knowledge of performance feedback and knowledge of results feedback), how to incorporate them in order to obtain the best results. A table summarizing each principle is provided.
