Braille, the Solid Form of Language
Iacopo Balocco
The article analyses Braille not as a system in its own right, but as a code of communication/transcription that makes reading and writing solid and tangible. Through the concept of brain plasticity, it illustrates how the human brain can reorganise itself to process linguistic information through touch or sight, activating the same cortical areas. This crossmodal reorganisation demonstrates that the boundaries between the senses are fluid, making reading an act of synaesthesia where it is possible to «hear» words with one’s fingers. The proposed approach combines the humanistic culture of Augusto Romagnoli with modern neuroscience, celebrating the mind’s ability to adapt to sensory deficits.
