Monitoring during Text Comprehension: the Role of Text and Question Types

Written text comprehension represents one of the main competencies of a child and involves different aspects. However, in the assessment of comprehension sometimes only a general score is considered without taking into account possible further information. The present study stresses, in particular, the fact that certain reading comprehension tests, like the MT-3 battery (Cornoldi & Carretti, 2016), offer the opportunity of differentiating the type of elaboration involved by question type (referring either to global or local processing) and text type (narrative vs descriptive). Using a monitoring request (where the children were asked to estimate the accuracy of their responses), the study showed that monitoring is also influenced by the type of text and the type of question.
