Maria Rita Torino, Rossella Muò

Aphasia usually influences the social life of persons affected and their significant others and can result in changed relationships and in a negative perception of quality of life. The social approach supports individuals with aphasia by empowering them and giving them the opportunity to take part in their recovery process and regain their personal identity. This article describes a model of intervention designed and adopted by a team of professionals at the Centro Afasia CIRP – Fondazione Carlo Molo Onlus in Turin, with the aim of achieving the best social inclusion for people with aphasia. The article focuses on Social and Community Theatre activities, which are found to be useful in improving social participation, managing communication abilities and regaining the identity of the person with aphasia.
