Communication aids in childhood and adolescence. Hi-tech equipment and integration processes in non-verbal children

Paola Sarti

Electronic and computer technologies introduce technical elements which change how typical low tech messages are produced and the time it takes to produce them, with particular reference to features such as voice output, external message memory, the significant increase in the number of symbols available, etc. All these elements allow for a higher degree of autonomy, but they increase demands, on multiple levels, on the person with complex communication needs. In the article the complex processes related to the full integration of hi-tech supports as communication aids and the implications for the design of AAC interventions are discussed.
