This study aimed to assess the presence of deficits in verbal comprehension and phonological awareness and the association with deficits in other cognitive functions in a population with substance abuse disorder. Twenty-eight people with substance abuse disorder (age 18 - 23, M=18) participated in the study. Proffilo, a serious game assessing verbal comprehension, phonological awareness, visuospatial attention, visuoperceptive reasoning, motion perception and working memory was used. Difficulties in the area of phonological awareness emerged in 39.3% of the cases and in 7% in the area of verbal comprehension. Individuals with difficulties in phonological awareness also showed deficits in movement perception in 20% of the cases and deficits in working memory in 10.7%. The results indicate the importance of assessing the impact of deficits in the area of phonological awareness and their relationship to other cognitive deficits in populations with substance misuse disorders in adulthood.
