The Primary Language Disorder and the School Learning

The likelihood of developing school learning problems in the language disorder population is five times higher than in the normal population. While literature has established that there is a considerable comorbidity between language disorder and learning disorder, what is still not clear are the causes of this comorbidity and above all which specific skills impaired in the child with language disorder correlate with learning difficulties. Through a systematic review of scientific literature, this research has set itself the goal of understanding the evolution and in particular the impact on school learning of language difficulties and disorders that are not secondary to other pathologies. Through a systematic search on the main biomedical databases, ten studies were identified, none of which, however, were carried out on the Italian speaking population. The results show a correlation between primary language disorder and dyslexia and between specific components of oral language and difficulties in the development in school age of the skills of reading, writing and formal learning of mathematics. These results offer useful indications for the definition of speech therapy interventions in preschool age.
