The Role of Speech and Language Therapist as Part of the Care Team in Treating Primary Progressive Aphasia

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a rare aphasic syndrome caused by neurodegenerative brain disease, where language deficits are the primary presenting symptom. Currently, there are no effective medications to treat PPA, therefore speech and language therapy turn to be helpful to maximize communication for as long as possible and improve quality of life. This article aims to define the role of speech and language therapist in PPA as an integral part of the care team, through a review of scientific literature and the distribution of a qualitative questionnaire addressed to speech and language therapists of Lombard area, which has confirmed the necessity of clinical guidelines.
