Clinical Reasoning in Speech and Language Therapy

Hazel Roddam

This short paper presents a reflection on issues related to clinical reasoning that are pertinent to all Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) professionals. The paper briefly outlines four main aspects for consideration: the challenges of clinical reasoning in SLT; the influences on our clinical reasoning — the insights we can gain from the variability that exists in our clinical practice and the evidence that our perceptions of evidence-based practice (EBP) are evolving and changing; the impact of our clinical reasoning — what we know about the effects when research evidence is implemented into practice; strategic approaches to better support clinical reasoning.
