The objectives of this article are 1) investigating correlations between motor development, action schemes and cognitive development 2) constructing a valid methodology for specific neuro and psychomotor intervention areas, both clinical and preventive. Two tools were used 1) the psychomotor observation of spontaneous behavior and 2) the Uzgiris-Hunt ordinal scales of psychological development. These choices were based on a shared theoretical basis, namely, Jean Piaget’s theses on development. The sample was made up of 30 children between 14 and 24 months having typical development who were evaluated in the day-care center they attended, and four children between 14 and 36 months with a diagnosis and atypical development who were evaluated during psychomotor therapy sessions. Data was compared between the two samples. In the group having typical development, levels in cognitive and motor development were substantially correlated. Two children in the group of 30 were considered «at risk». Profiles of the children in the second group were compared to children having the same age in the first group, in order to better understand which aspects of motor development could be related to the cognitive level achieved.
