The international migration of women is posing multiple challenges to the care systems of their country of origin, involving in particular the families of the female migrant workers who are left at home. Based on an exploratory multi-located research conducted in Italy, Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the article explores the occurring correlation between the newly achieved professional identities of the parents, within Moldovan and Romanian families that have become transnational through the phenomenon of female emigration. The author analyses on the one hand the transit from Italy to the country of origin implemented by the female migrants, and on the other the labour of reproduction fulfilled by their husbands. The main findings show how female mobility is strongly influenced by numerous structural and normative factors, and how the husbands of the women usually struggle to manage their new role within the family by having to face the expectations of their social context and the desires of their children.
